The founders are lifelong friends, Ben & Martin. They are on a mission to share their love and knowledge of wine, helping people find extraordinary wine without breaking the bank. I had the pleasure of meeting Ben who hand-delivered my box making the experience even more special. He is clearly passionate about wine and knows it inside out! Here is what I received and, since I’m not a wine expert (yet), I’m also sharing the tasting notes, so you get a proper feel for it. Red Vin 2017, Alphabetical. What a lovely and fruity red wine. Loved the fact that the instructions were to have it chilled, that is how my mum drinks her reds. Paired with a bowl of minestrone soup and it was a delight. Notes: A smartly made South African cabernet franc blend aged in French oak barrels means it’s more than a straight pop and pour (more like a fresh, fruity Bordeaux). The cab franc with the fresh, yet warm climate means you have a fresh acidity of a Loire red with added fruitiness and depth. Expect blackberry fruits, savouriness and mineral freshness. Serve slightly chilled to further focus the acidity and tannins. Ma Cuvée, Chateau Fontainebleau, 2018. What a beautiful dry white wine. It was fruity and light, perfect for the hot summer nights. I paired with a chickpea tagine and that worked really well with all the spices. Would definitely have it again. Notes: Biodynamic wine produced in the beautiful Provençal setting of Var. The natural spring at the heart of the estate shows in the purity and balance. Expect light orchard fruits, citrus and soft freshness. Howard John 2018, Lourens Family Wines. This bottle looks special, I’m (planning) to save until the winter as that is when I mostly enjoy red wine. Notes: Franco Lourens works at Alheit Family Wines, one of South Africa’s leading winemakers, and has created this cinsault, carignan, grenache noir as a tribute to his father. Expect aromas of lavender and almonds, and a balanced palate of red berry fruits and more savoury flavours of cured meats. Ourglass offers 3 types of membership which makes great wine accessible and gives people the chance to try wines that they wouldn’t otherwise. The first time - Where the love story begins, 3 bottles for £35 p/m. The next level - At this level, the winemakers are able to select the best sites, grapes and techniques, 3-5 bottles for £75 p/m. This is it - The finest raw materials in the hands of the top global talent, 3-6 bottles for £120 p/m. Good to note where the money goes as well - instead of paying for tax, logistics and retail costs, that money is spent on the actual wine which makes it possible to get extraordinary wine that is still affordable. Wine not give them a try?!
