For us, authenticity really is the key word when it comes to Bokksu. While there are many other Japanese snack box services out there, Bokksu really feel like they go the extra mile - not only in the attention to detail in the presentation of the service, but also in the type of product included. This means some creative, out-of-the-box thinking - going beyond the kinds of Japanese snacks already well-known in the UK and instead opting for flavours genuinely popular in Japan. Each monthly box contains 20–25 snacks (as well as some tea!) and - in our case - ranged from savory delights like Dondon Yaki and Uni rice crackers to mouthwatering sweets like the handmade Yuzu Sake candy or the autumnal Hokkaido Red Bean doughnuts.
What’s so exciting about Bokksu is that they have actually created a number of unique products themselves - as well as in collaboration with many Japanese producers - this means you can’t find them anywhere else! We heartily recommend the white chocolate infused strawberry; the sensation of it exploding and breaking apart in your mouth has to be experienced to be believed - seriously delicious! There are no worries about being bewildered about what everything is - the box also contains a glossy booklet full of wonderful photography and information on every treat included, including allergy details and whether each product is suitable for vegetarians.
While it goes without saying the snacks left our taste-buds immensely satisfied, what really filled our hearts with appreciation was that Bokksu also has a clear eye out for the makers too - with both the included booklet and their website prominently championing the commitment to craft and culture represented by those back in Japan producing the treats. These often family run businesses have been trading for generations, and by showcasing both the locales they hail from and their creative techniques with a spread of video content on their website, Bokksu are doing due diligence in highlighting that there’s a human side behind every great product. Now that’s something we can really tuck into.
