Hever Castle Review: Jousting, Water Mazes & Medieval Castles

As soon as we arrived, we rushed to the Medieval Jousting Tournament where Sir Henry of Hever took on other knights from near and far in a demonstration of skills before Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII. I was really impressed by the horsemen, the commentator was hilarious and the children really enjoyed the show! You can simply go to the field and watch stood up or seated on the grass or you can book the stands from just £2.50pp in advance online which would be a fantastic extra add on and a fun experience.

We left before the end as we were keen to visit the Water Maze which we had seen on the Hever Castle website. En route we stopped to admire the cygnets swimming in the most. There’s so much wildlife and pond life to enjoy and you can buy duck and fish food from the information booth for only 50p a bag. I had to ask a few times to find the Water Maze as it’s tucked away but 100% worth the effort! It’s so fun and would just be gorgeous on a sunny day. I’ll leave it as a surprise what happens if you go the wrong way but it took us by surprise and made us laugh. So much fun!! The Water Maze is right by the archery which is a great add on activity suitable for adults and children ages 8+ from £4. By this stage we were a bit hungry so we decided to stop for lunch at the restaurant, which was delicious and spotless. There was a barbecue outside serving burgers and hotdogs then a selection of hot and cold food inside. My wrap was flavoursome and healthy but a bit soggy. The girls had £6 children’s lunch bags which both polished off with no complaints! Next stop Hever Castle itself which I only saw two rooms off since I decided my daughter’s misbehaviour was too stressful surrounded by antiques but Neel thoroughly enjoyed his tour of the house, which he enjoyed, finding it very informative about the life and divorce of Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn. While Neel enjoyed the castle, we fed the ducks which terrified and thrilled the girls in equal measure as the ducks were literally standing in us to get the food - absolutely no fear of us at all. Last stop in a busy day was the playground. We started in the 0-7 playground which is a sandpit with some fun play equipment but quickly abandoned it when we realised the 7+ playground had a big wooden medieval castle in multiple levels which both girls loved playing in supervised. There is also an adventure playground behind the castle suitable for all ages. We had an amazing day at Hever Castle and would definitely return.
