Written and directed by drag artist ShayShay, whose work focuses on themes of identity, gender diversity, Asian experiences - all of which take centre stage here. LGBTQ+ inclusivity guaranteed. You know the comedy will be raucous and bawdy, the commentary playful. It’s quickly apparent Mulan Rouge is the mash-up you didn’t know you needed and probably now can’t live without. The story is set around Mulan who drags up as a soldier, reporting for service at the iconic windmill of the Moulin Rouge to discover the world previously obscured behind the gender-binary. The setup lends itself perfectly for interactivity and participation - with the show and your fellow guests. It is a celebration of pure queer joy - drag, burlesque, cabaret, and on-the-spot improv. The humour and punning hit the mark throughout with iconic singalong moments. The cast of performers are enigmatic and engaging. Visit the bar to sample from the cocktail menu - all themed to perfection with complimenting ingredients. The Whisper with lychee, ginger is gorgeous. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t sleep on the Camembert starter either! Mulan Rouge is one of those truly affirming affairs that doesn’t retread old ground - it wants you to be wowed with theming, scandalized with storytelling, and get very, very merry. It was a wonderful experience and a memorable evening. Go and check out Mulan Rouge - which runs until the end of January 2022.
