Meet the distiller - Ellis gin was founded by entrepreneur Carol Jackson in 2018. The aim of the brand was to bring fun and colour to the gin market. They achieved this mark with the launch of two colour-changing pink and blue gins. A beautiful pink shimmer gin and bright sunshine yellow Lemon gin followed. The Ellis No. 5 Lemon Gin was a finalist in the Scottish Gin Awards in 2020.
The range can be used to make fancy cocktails or just drink with tonic and to enjoy the natural flavours. Fun with Friends - The pack I received was the Ellis Gin Small Gift Box, it contained one of each of the range in a mini, enough for a single for each. We went round to see some of our friends for drinks and fun and so thought it would be a great way to try them. We started with the blue – which is a butterfly pea, an Asian flower that gives it a vibrant blue colour and herby taste, when you add tonic it turns a light purple. Fun and easy to drink and loved the colour change. Next, we couldn’t resist the pink shimmer. It's a lovely colour and it didn’t lose its shimmer even with tonic. It's recommended to have with lemonade, but this makes it a little too sweet for me. Next time I’ll be adding it to fizz. We also tried the bramble, a floral gin with a bit of spice, we had with tonic, and it turns orange. Easy to drink, next time will try with ginger ale as suggested by the distiller, as think this will bring out the spice. The yellow Eilis No. 5 Gin was my favourite, I tried it, then added it to fizz, to give it a lovely lemon flavour. A friend recommends using it in a gimlet. If you or your friends are avid cocktail makers then what a great pack this will be, the website has lots of recipes for you to try. They also have a cocktail subscription box, so each month you could be trying these with friends. Great fun and loved sharing this box with my lovely gin-loving friend.
