The Dundee Gin Co was founded in 2017 with the launch of a full-strength marmalade gin. Although that gin has now been moved into one marmalade liqueur gin and a classic dry, the theme of marmalade has been a great way to stay connected with the city of Dundee.
The brand used this to continue the strong link through the rest of their products using only the very best local ingredients. They are not just Dundee by name, they are Dundee in their ethos. The brand believes it's important to support the local area and so is constantly trying to create valuable relationships with traders, at the heart of the Dundonian community to make a difference in the area. The distillery is currently undertaking a rebrand and at the time of sending, final labels were not quite ready so the managing director printed and hand-cut and you can see where the foiling has been imitated. Personally, I much prefer the new branding. Stand-out botanicals include ylang-ylang, strawberry guava, lemongrass, ginger and cardamom. All grown at the botanic gardens in Dundee. On the nose, notes of juniper and citrus stand out with hints of liquorice. To taste, you're taking on a real adventure of flavour. Fresh juniper at the fore again supported by citrus. Then there's a peppery warmth that fills the mouth and then cleanses to leave sweeter elements. There are subtle hints of cinnamon and lemongrass and then a bite of something else at the end. This quadruple distilled gin packs a punch, bottled at 46%. However, it is incredibly smooth in both texture and taste. It's a gin that can most definitely be sipped neat to fully appreciate all the flavours that come through but equally can be socially toned down with a splash of tonic and your choice of citrus.
