Bokksu: Discovering Japan Through Snacks
I have only been to Japan a couple of times in my life, and my last visit was in 2018, before COVID-19. One of the things I missed the most when I was there was grabbing a quick snack at a local convenience store like Lawson or Family Mart. However, I was pleased to find out that my longing for snacks like these could be contained with a subscription box like the one I tried out this month from Bokksu!
Bokksu boxes can be delivered to your front door every month, and you can choose to order a 1-month up to a 12-month subscription starting at USD 39.99 per box. Each box contains snacks like candies, biscuits, cookies, chips, and teas that are curated around events that are happening in Japan at the time of order. This month, I received a box that was themed “Seasons of Japan”, which showcased seasonal snacks commonly eaten during the four seasons in Japan. A snack guide is included with information on where the snack originates and what it contains. Did I mention the snacks are sourced by small, family-run businesses throughout Japan? Do you remember when I mentioned the convenience store snacks I used to buy? Though the quality of those convenience store snacks was already incredible, the quality of the snacks from Bokksu seemed even better to me, knowing they came from family-run bakeries and shops throughout Japan. I feel that there is even more attention to quality that way! Flavors and textures in this box ranged from savory to chocolatey, matcha to gummy, and fruity to crispy. I’m still working through all the snacks, but I think my current favourite would have to be the “White Strawberry”, which Bokksu describes as “freeze-dried, infused with white chocolate to make a sweet, refreshing treat.” This description hits the nail on the head! Moreover, it’s not crispy like you might think - it’s more of a dense texture while still maintaining that strawberry flavor and sweetness. Overall, I was very happy to receive this box, and I would consider ordering another in the near future. I would recommend it to my friends and family that are curious about trying Japanese snacks and/or need the hook up with some high-quality snacks; this subscription box works well as a gift for all ages!
