Juniper as expected but not just any old juniper but English juniper! Becketts are unique in that they use English juniper berries that are handpicked from Box Hill in Surrey. English juniper experienced a severe decline due to poor seed quality and disease but thanks to Becketts, National Trust and Natural England a long-term conservation project has been undertaken to create a new juniper population on Juniper Top Surrey. They use a unique recipe called no.1097 that uses only 6 botanicals. They include locally grown mint, coriander, Italian orris root, Spanish sweet orange peel and Moroccan lime and of course English juniper. For me, on the nose, you can certainly smell the juniper as it comes through lovely and strong as you'd expect for a London dry gin. I also get a slight sweetness as well which is very pleasing. I tried this gin as a straight G&T using the recommended serve of plenty of ice, a good tonic and my homegrown mint garnish! I love the fresh punchy taste that gives you a lovely mouthfeel. It's a 48% ABV so it packs a punch in a good way. The juniper-forward leads into a sweetness that has a tart edge from the mint giving it the fresh taste I mentioned before. A really good gin and tonic give you a great drink leaving a creaminess from the orris root in its finish. What I'd call a proper gin and tonic! Looking on their website, they have a great selection of cocktails to try! I especially want to try the Lucky 22 and a Southside as they would be perfect for cocktails with their depth of flavour and strength. A very English gin in every sense!
