The Dundee Gin Company

It was a pleasure to receive this bottle of hand-crafted Scottish Gin from a family-owned business. Relatively new, The Dundee Gin Co has a range of gins (including Navy and Old Tom), liqueurs (including Dundee Cake flavour) and even a rum. Selection packs of miniatures are available if picking one to try feels like a big decision!

I have the Dundee Classic Dry Gin. A clear gin, on the nose there is the light intensity with a good level of juniper mixed with tropical fruit aromas that reminded me of pineapple as well as a nod to something floral. To taste the juniper is definitely there but not prominent as it is in classic London Dry. With an oily mouthfeel, to me, this gin had a sherbety citrus flavour that was in keeping with the fruity aromas on the nose. The floral scent I'd nosed became more obvious in the mouth and I interpreted it as lavender and heather. Finally, there was a long warm spicy finish. This gin is quadruple distilled so its smoothness masks its high alcohol content which is 46% ABV-not that I'm complaining! I've tried this gin in my two favourite styles of gin serve; a classic gin and tonic and a Martini! Both have their own merits and this gin does them equally very well! As a G&T, I used a 50ml measure with Mediterranean tonic at 1:2 in a glass with plenty of ice. I garnished it with a fresh lime wheel and a sprig of lavender. Tangy with a floral citrus burst, if there was a G&T Starburst this would be it, albeit obviously less sweet than the soft chewy squares we're all familiar with! The Martini was my second serve and with all that zesty, sherbet citrus from the gin, it had to be a lemon twist garnish over the alternative of an olive, or three. Not all gin can stand up to a Martini serve but this one certainly can. I used the summer fruit flavours from Dolin vermouth to compliment the Dundee Gin at a ratio of 6:1, stirred over ice. The end result was a dry, fruity and floral martini with a fine oily mouthfeel that's incredibly smooth. All in all a lovely contemporary gin with tropical fruit, citrus and floral notes dominating the flavour profile.
