Afternoon Tea at The Rubens - a must do

The Rubens at the Palace is a truly stunning hotel in an absolutely amazing location. I visited this hotel last week for Royal Afternoon Tea.

The moment we got to the entrance of the hotel, we were greeted with a smile and pleasant small talk from the doorman. We arrived slightly early but were greeted very warmly and taken straight through to our table which faced the Royal Mews so we had a wonderful view of the comings and goings all afternoon, including a beautiful horse drawn carriage leaving the Mews. We were well looked after by Abbras. He took great care of us and helped us to decipher which food items were which. The old-fashioned decor might not be to everyone's taste, but it's undeniably cosy, well-kept and fitting in with the character of the hotel and surrounding area. The tea menu was excellent - although there were no oolong teas on offer. Tea was served promptly and it was delicious. Piping hot and served in beautiful cups. The sandwiches which followed were a good selection. I loved their take on coronation chicken - a small, round (but well-filled) sandwich with chopped almonds on the outside! Very nice. All the bread felt and tasted fresh and were obviously made that day. The scones were one of the best we've had. We were offered 2 types of scones, traditional plain ones and honey scones. I thought the honey scones were going to be sickly and sweet, but they were a delight! So light, fluffy and moreish. The clotted cream was just right also - not straight from the fridge. And then the patisserie! Every single one was a knockout. Perfect looking and perfect tasting. There were three we couldn't quite finish and took them home. We would thoroughly recommend The Rubens to anyone looking for an indulgent treat when visiting Buckingham Palace or any of the tourist attractions nearby.
